It's a perfect time to reflect on the many wonderful people who have made our lives better. Is there someone in particular who you would like to thank? Someone who has made a positive difference in your life? If so, why not take the Gratitude Challenge?
The challenge involves making three “gratitude” phone calls over the next several weeks.
So let’s get started! First, think of someone whom you’re grateful for. This could include:
- A teacher who inspired you
- A coach who helped you be your best self
- A mentor who saw the best in you
- A colleague who you admire for their passion and integrity
- A barber who helps you look and feel great on a regular basis
- Someone who has been kind to your child, or your parent
- A relative who always remembers you on your birthday
- Someone whose smile brightens your day
- Someone you haven’t seen in years
- Someone you see everyday, and can sometimes take for granted
- A company who makes a product that you absolutely love
- An author of your favorite book
When you’ve decided whom you’d like to thank, start thinking through what you’d like to say. It’s great if you can add some specifics. Here are some sample ideas:
“Hey Janet, I’m calling because I wanted you to know how much I appreciate the way you listen. Whenever I have something I’m anxious about, and I talk to you, I end up laughing, relaxing and feeling better. The other day when I stopped by, I really appreciated the way you poured me some tea and took the time to reflect back what you heard me say about my job. You mean a lot to me, and I’m so grateful for you!”
Or,
“Dan, you and your crew have been so reliable in helping us take care of our car for the past few years. Every time we come, we know we can rely on you guys to get the job done, and that brings us a lot of peace of mind.”
Or,
“Mr. Jackson, you were my fifth grade teacher, and yet you were much more than that. You were a mentor to me, and you helped me believe in myself. You saw that I liked to doodle in class, and instead of punishing me for not listening, you encouraged me to pursue art. I’m now a graphic designer and loving it, but I am not sure if I would have chosen this path if it hadn’t been for you. Thank you for being a teacher in the true sense of the word.
Finally, commit to making your calls. You might call someone once a week for three consecutive weeks, or three people, calling each one once.
Of course, it’s not easy to remember to do this three times, so we’re here to help make it easier. Join us in the Gratitude Challenge! Sign up here for reminders as well as messages of gratitude and inspiration.
